September is beautiful down here. The weather is mild, most who visit or live here are drawn to the outdoors, and there’s a pleasant energy in the air.
While the weather is favorable and the energy is delightful, September is also a month dedicated to raising awareness about suicide, the 11th leading cause of death in the US and a topic that touches countless lives.
This year, the theme for Suicide Awareness Month, "Connect to Protect", shines a light on the importance of relationships in safeguarding mental health.
At the heart of "Connect to Protect" is the understanding that humans are inherently social beings. Our relationships shape our experiences, influence our well-being, and can be a lifeline during difficult times. It should come as no surprise that strong, supportive connections—both with ourselves and others—can significantly lower the risk of suicide and foster a more resilient community.
